Spiritual Handfasting

Legal?

Handfasting Ceremonies can be Legal or Non-Legal Ceremonies. Rites and Rituals Scotland are authorised by the Registrar General to conduct legal wedding ceremonies in Scotland.

What?

Handfasting Ceremonies can be stand alone ceremonies (a bit like a Pagan ceremony) or the ritual can be included in what might be best described as a Traditional Ceremony. Please read the section below to learn more.

Where?

From the Outer Hebrides to the beautiful Borders, your Handfasting ceremony can be held anywhere in Scotland... on top of a mountain, by a loch, in a forest or any other venue you choose.

Mood?

Handfasting ceremonies are sacred and deeply meaningful, but they can also be infused with joy and lightheartedness. Whether you desire a ceremony that is reverent and traditional or one with a touch of humour, we are here to help you create the perfect experience that reflects your unique love story.

Who?

If it is a legal wedding ceremony, you will need to have 2 witnesses over the age of 16 present. If it's a non-legal elopement, you do not need witnesses although you are welcome to have them.

Spiritual Handfasting

A Spiritual Handfasting is a deeply meaningful ceremony where couples honour their connection and commitment to each other through a sacred ritual that symbolises unity and eternal love. Unlike traditional weddings, a handfasting often incorporates spiritual or nature-based elements, reflecting a couple’s shared beliefs and values. The ritual involves binding the couple's hands together with ribbons or cords, signifying their union and the joining of their lives. This ancient practice is not only a beautiful Scottish tradition but also a profound way to celebrate a relationship rooted in mutual respect, love, and spiritual harmony.

A Handfasting can be a stand-alone ceremony where the entire event centres around the Handfasting ritual, allowing for a deeply personal and immersive experience that focuses on the spiritual aspects of your union. In this case, every element of the ceremony is crafted to reflect the couple’s values and the sacred bond they share, creating a truly unique and meaningful celebration. Alternatively, a Handfasting can be incorporated into a more traditional wedding or vow renewal ceremony, blending this ancient ritual with other customs to create a harmonious fusion of old and new.

Couples who choose a Spiritual Handfasting are often drawn to the beauty and symbolism of this timeless ritual. It is a powerful way to honour your unique connection and the spiritual journey you are beginning together. A Handfasting ceremony celebrates the unity of your souls and the commitment to share your lives in love, trust, and mutual respect. Whether performed as the centerpiece of your wedding or as an element within a traditional ceremony, a spiritual handfasting is a beautiful expression of the bond that you and your partner share.
