The Power of Healing Rituals

Last week, the Princess of Wales shared the heartwarming news that her cancer is in remission. She also spoke about how tough it can be to get back to normal after a cancer journey. As someone who’s just finished my own cancer journey, I completely understand. The cancer journey is long, often exhausting, and sometimes brutal. And then, one day it’s over. You go from constant hospital visits, scans, blood tests, and treatments — where you’re surrounded by professionals who are working hard to save your life — to being on your own. No more daily check-ins, no more immediate support. It can feel unsettling. And for many cancer survivors, the worry doesn’t just disappear. Has it really gone? Will it come back? Is that another lump?! The questions can be endless.

I’m lucky to have an amazing support system around me, but during treatment, I met so many people who don’t. For them, finishing treatment means stepping into an unknown world alone. Thankfully, organisations like Maggie’s and Macmillan Cancer Support are there to help, and do excellent work.

One thing that can really help in this phase is creating small healing rituals. They bring structure, comfort, and a sense of normalcy when everything feels a bit uncertain. Having little routines can help process emotions, rebuild confidence, and provide a sense of control. Research even shows that mindfulness and self-care can reduce stress, improve mental health, and support physical recovery.

And the best part? Healing rituals don’t need to be complicated. Even the smallest habits can bring peace, reassurance, and a sense of well-being.

Simple Healing Rituals

Here are a few easy ideas to try:

1. Morning Gratitude Practice – Start your day by listing three things you’re grateful for. It’s a simple way to shift your mindset toward positivity.

2. Tea or Coffee Ritual – Take a moment to really enjoy a warm cup of tea or coffee. Notice the aroma, the warmth, and the comfort it brings.

3. Gentle Movement – Whether it’s yoga, stretching, or just a short walk, moving your body helps reconnect you to yourself and eases stress.

4. Journalling – Writing things down—thoughts, feelings, reflections — can be a powerful way to clear your mind and find clarity.

5. Getting Out into Nature – Spend time outdoors, whether it’s a walk in the park, sitting by a river, or simply feeling the sun on your face. Nature has a grounding, healing effect that can help bring a sense of peace and perspective.

6. Breathing Exercises – Deep breaths or guided meditation can help bring calm and ease anxiety.

7. Aromatherapy & Baths – A warm bath with essential oils like lavender or chamomile can be incredibly soothing.

8. Creative Expression – Painting, knitting, playing music — doing something creative can be deeply healing.

9. Bedtime Wind-Down Routine – End the day with a calming ritual like reading, lighting a candle, or listening to soothing music for better sleep.

Adding these little rituals into your day can make a big difference. They help bring peace, balance, and a reminder that healing isn’t just about the body — it’s about the mind and spirit too.
